Still kickin’

Hey dudes! I know it’s been a long while since I last updated the ol’ blog, but thanks so so much for sticking around. It means the world to me that you’ve kept following me through this drought (and if you just haven’t purged your followed blogs lately, well, that’s okay too, haha!).

The truth of the matter is that it’s been a difficult transition, coming back to Virginia. I’m in a MUCH better place now, mentally. Steve, my boyfriend, is doing so SO much better now that we’re here. But I’m feeling very lost.

When I was in Pittsburgh, I had a full time job, benefits, my own place, lots of opportunities to do fun things. Now I’m employed for only 8 hours a week, I can’t even afford Obamacare, and feel very guilty for burdening my in-laws. I’m not depressed, but I feel pretty discouraged. I know good things will come along, and soon, but not be as successful as you thought you’d be is a hard pill to swallow.

My lack of confidence has effected my will to blog up until now, and I apologize for that. I really expected things to be the opposite– that I’d feel free and inspired. But I’m getting to a place where I’m ready to grab at the things I want and the things I want to do!

So thanks for standing by me, y’all. I’m feeling an upswing. And yes, that means a Wednesday Wants is coming up this week, haha!

Big changes!

Woah. Long time no blog, huh?

About a month ago, I let y’all know that my blogging may be sparse because of my boyfriend’s health problems. Well. The issues have gotten bad enough that we’ve decided to make a big life change.

Two years ago, we moved to Steve’s home– Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I love Pittsburgh, but as time went on, we realized we’d made a mistake. City life just doesn’t suit us, now that he’s in his thirties and, at heart, I am about eighty-four. These feelings built up until Steve started to become very ill two months ago. So two weeks ago, we made the decision to move back to my home-state, Virginia, to live with his family for a while as he recovers. It’s easily been the most stressful time of both of our lives and we just need to get back to a support system.

Though that’s the main reason for our move, I also just love my home with a huge passion. Richmond, Virginia is my heart. I can’t wait to get back! There’s so much that I miss!

So, things will still be a little quiet around here while we pack and move (~mid-to-late July). But I promise I’ll be back on it with a vengeance once I’m settled into my new home. After all, I don’t have a job lined up yet, haha!

Until then, please enjoy som’a’this:

Big change!

So, on Friday, I decided to go through with something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Here are the before and after shots!

Woah! This is a big and meaningful first step for me, confidence-wise, with pastel hair coming soon!

I wanted to actually finally act on my interest and just jump in before I had the time to talk myself out of it. In the past, I’d have filled my Pinterest boards with ideas of what I wished I looked like, but would always somehow talk myself out of it because of this or that– too fat, not enough money, what would people say?

This time I will not indulge my fear of change or being noticed! I’m not backing down, even after ALREADY being told by a near-stranger that they didn’t like it. If this were a couple years ago, I would have been miserable having anything about my looks insulted. But I’m determined to be the person I want to be this year, even if it will attract some negative attention. This is the year I do things for ME.

Updates pictures to come soon!

Radical Self-betterment! Lent at our house.

So as you maybe know, a few days ago was Ash Wednesday and that means Lent begins!

Now, I’m pretty dang far from Catholic. I practice Buddhism and don’t at all believe in a creator god. My boyfriend, however, while fairly skeptical, has always participated in Lent and other Catholic traditions. I can definitely appreciate the concept of interior renewal and giving things up for the good of your body and mind. So, while I’m not Catholic myself, I want to support my boyfriend during this time by abstaining from a few things as well. I know it’s always hard for me to avoid temptations when I see someone else just doing whatever, so I want to make things as easy on him as possible.

He’s abstaining from alcohol and tobacco (he only smokes when he drinks).

As for me, I’m giving up…. REALITY TELEVISION. How do I feel about that, you ask?

Of all the shows I watch, reality tv probably makes up about, like, 75% of it. None of the worst offenders, but I’m all about some Rupaul’s Drag Race, Project Runway, Say Yes to the Dress, and Four Weddings. Worst of all, I BUY episodes of all these things! My boyf is always on me about it, but I can’t stop myself!

So for these 40 days, I’m off the stuff! And fuck if I’m not feelin’ it already! But the bright side is that I’ll get more reading and gaming done (not to mention some exercise maybe? Haha!).

We’re also totally overhauling how we eat and what we do with spare time, but I’ll post more about that later!

A week of firsts!

It’s been a busy week for me, starting with a brand-spankin-new haircut!

Hooray! I’m always weirdly nervous about going to salons. I’m not worried about my hair not turning out the way I want or anything. Or that the stylist will do a bad job. I guess I’m just nervous about chatting with the stylist and trying not a to be awkward and explaining why my hair is such a dried out mess.

Well, it was actually a great experience and I love my new cut! I went to Salon 22 in the Lawrenceville neighborhood here in Pittsburgh and Sarah was my stylist. She was fun and nice and I’m going back again soon!

My next first happened just today! Remember that rifle my boyfriend bought me for Valentine’s Day? Well, I finally got to shoot it for the first time today. I also got to shoot my boyfriend’s revolver, which was a blast (no pun intended, yeesh!).

(My range permit! With some private info taken out,of course ;D)

(Shooting my rifle for the first time. Loud as fuq!)

(Shooting my boyf’s pistol! You can see from how evil I look that I had fun with that one!)

I really need to strengthen up. Between the 16 degree weather numbing me and how weak my arms and hands are, the rifle was really swaying on me after only 30 or so rounds! Gotta get some muscles on me!

What exciting new things have y’all been up to?

Goodbye Sochi Olympics.

I didn’t mention this in any of my posts recently, but I fuckin’ LOVE the Olympics. I’m a huge sap, and so the thought of countries coming together in the name of healthy competition and good sportsmanship. I know there is corruption and questionable scoring sometimes and yadda yadda, but on the whole, the Olympic games are a very benevolent thing that actually makes me proud of humanity.

For my boyfriend and me, the main person we were rooting for was Tina Maze of Slovenia.

You see, my boyfriend is comes from a Slovenian immigrant family. They worked very very hard here in the United States and have become very successful. I hadn’t even heard of Slovenia until I met my boyfriend– it’s a small country and is still in economic hardship. Aside from that, no Slovenian has ever won a gold in the Olympic games. So we were really pulling for her!

She ended up tying for first in Women’s Downhill (which is UNHEARD of!) and winning gold again in Giant Slalom. We were so happy! Honorable mentions for people we were Olympic-crushing on:

As for me, I’ve always been a biathlon fanatic! So for Valentine’s Day, my boyfriend got my an interesting gift!

A Russian rifle, hahahaha!

Did you enjoy the Olympics this year? Who were your favorites?

Wednesday Wants Vol. 16

So it’s been, like, two weeks since I last posted! And oh my gosh, what a two weeks it has been! Remember how my boyfriend was going to be leaving for Louisiana for three months? Well, I really wanted to spend as much time as I possibly could with him, which left very little time for blogging. WHELP, he decided the day before he was set to leave that he didn’t want to go after all. So there’s that, haha.

THEN, I was set to get my beautiful Jeep on Saturday. It broke down on in West Virginia, 4 hours away from my home in Pittsburgh. So the next day we went down for my brother to fix it. THAT worked, but another goddamn part broke! Arrrghhh. So we had to go back down to my hometown in Richmond (another 4 hours away), get a part the next day, drive back up, then drive back to Pittsburgh. All is well now, but sheesh!

1.) Pittsburgh Tote via Modcloth

Bet yinz guys’ tote aint as cool as this’n, ya jagoffs! Since moving to Pittsburgh, I’ve had to get used to a lot of things! The high quantities of German food, the accent, the brusqueness, but most of all– navigating the damn place. I mean, look at this:

But it’s worth the confusion (sometimes!), to experience Pitsburgh’s many fun neighborhoods!

2.) Heart Leg Warmers by IMUNIVERSE

Loooooook how cute! Gahhh! Now, I’ve had combat boots for a very long time. When I was a wee teen-person, my dad took my out to the army surplus and bought me an old-ass pair of paratrooper jump boots. I’ve worn them nearly every day since! But I guess I never really though about dressin’ em up with cute leg warmers and socks! Too bad winter is nearing its end. Scratch that– fuck winter.

3.) Sailor Moon Shirt via Look Human

Omg. I’m going through somethin’ here where I’m obsessed with pink. So a pink raglan Sailor Moon shirt? UH. YEAH. I’LL TAKE TEN PLEASE.

4.) Agent Mulder Sparkly Brooch by Hood Rat Rough Diamond

Oooh Fox Mulder oooh! Heheh! Agent Mulder was definitely one of my first TV crushes! He was so matter-of-fact with his kooky deductions and somehow was always right?? Haha. I grew to totally be a Team Scully gal, but Spooky Mulder has a real huge spot in my heart!

5.) Talking Picture Flats via Modcloth

Waaahhhh! How cute are these?! I never want to buy shoes, even though shoes are really the things that tie outfits together. Still though. Having to buy them just makes me groan. I’m totally gaga over these cute little fellas though!

6.) Arthur Library Tank via Look Human

Although I’m having a love-hate relationship with the library right at this very moment (I’ve been screamed at and basically treated very poorly by patrons and stray children today), still. I stand by it. Libraries are important and fun and….. ahhh….
